03 / FROM OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL
Read actively. Write thoughtfully.
Keep the thinking yours.
These three free, full-length sessions explore different skills: purposeful reading, metaphor writing and using AI for feedback while thinking independently. Watch in sections, pause to try the activity yourself, and bring a useful observation or question to your tutor.
Metaphor Builder: A Guided Writing Practice | Online Tutor Connect
62:12 · Writing craft
For: Grades 6–9
Create and test metaphors for emotions or ideas. The session moves from a modeled example to supported practice and an independent check, including where a comparison works and where it stops being useful.
Put it into practice: Choose one idea. Write a comparison, name two features it captures, and note one important limit. Revise the wording to match your intended tone.
The SQ3R Textbook Mastery Method: Survey, Question, Read, Recite & Review | Online Tutor Connect
62:20 · Active textbook reading
For: College learners
Explore Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. The session shows how to preview a chapter, read with a question in mind, explain key ideas from memory and revisit what remains unclear.
Put it into practice: Try one short textbook section. Turn its heading into a question, read to answer it, then close the text and explain the answer. Reopen it to check what you missed.
How to Use AI as a Study Buddy | Without Outsourcing Your Thinking | Online Tutor Connect
62:21 · Independent thinking with AI
For: High school, college & adult learners
Use the BUDDY approach to attempt the thinking first, ask for support and dialogue, check important information, and finish with independent practice rather than an automatically completed answer.
Put it into practice: Attempt a practice question before asking for a hint. Check the feedback against your course materials, then solve or explain a similar example without AI.

Try this before your next session
The Three-Minute Teach-Back Challenge. All you need is one familiar topic and a way to note a question.
- Minute 1 — Explain: Choose one topic you have already studied. Put your notes aside and explain it aloud in your own words. Use one example if it helps.
- Minute 2 — Find the uncertainty: Check your explanation against your notes, textbook or worked example. Identify one part you could not explain clearly.
- Minute 3 — Write one question: Turn that uncertainty into a specific question for your tutor, such as “Why do denominators need to match when adding fractions?”
For younger learners: Read a short paragraph or revisit a familiar problem together. Ask, “Can you tell me what that means?” or “Can you show me how you know?” Write down one question together and celebrate the attempt. Keep it conversational rather than turning it into a test.
04 / PRACTICAL SUPPORT
Make this week’s learning more focused.
1
Set one clear goal
Name a topic or skill to work on this week.
2
Practice consistently
Choose a short routine that fits your schedule.
3
Share useful feedback
Bring questions and observations to your next session.
A USEFUL QUESTION TO BRING
“I can read the words.
What do they mean?”
For example, a tutor could invite the learner to retell a short paragraph, use a familiar example, and check understanding before moving on.
Illustrative learning scenario; not a real learner’s story.
A NOTE FOR LEARNERS & FAMILIES
Progress begins with
a good conversation.
Ask your learner: What felt clear? What still needs practice? A few thoughtful questions can help a tutor understand priorities and plan more focused support.
