MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Understand. Question. Learn together.
“When learning becomes difficult, I believe the tutor and student should work together, each adapting to complement the needs and challenges of the other.”
Ask meaningful questions
Build critical thinking and understanding of the learning process.
Adapt together
Recognize each learner’s priorities and obstacles, and share responsibility for progress.
Support the whole learner
Connect the student, tutor, parents, and institution through complementary roles.
Read Todd’s full philosophy statement
I believe that effective tutoring is built on a foundation of mutual understanding and complementary roles shared by the student, tutor, institution, and parents. A good student is one who asks questions, works to master the process of learning, and develops the ability to analyze and engage critically with information and ideas. A good tutor, in turn, has the ability to teach effectively while taking the time to understand the priorities and obstacles of each individual student.
When learning becomes difficult, I believe the tutor and student should work together, each adapting to complement the needs and challenges of the other, rather than placing the burden of progress on either party alone.
Beyond the tutor-student relationship, I believe the institution plays a vital role in fostering an environment that encourages discourse, understanding, problem-solving, and novel ideas. Online Tutor Connect should actively support tutors by providing a constructive environment that empowers them to foster critical thinking, learning, and reflection in their students, ultimately enabling both tutors and students to reach their greatest potential.
Parents, too, are an essential part of this picture — a supportive parent provides the infrastructure that enables the student to thrive. When parents, tutors, and the institution each fulfill their roles and work to complement one another, the result is a collaborative ecosystem in which the student has every opportunity to achieve their greatest possible success.
