Education, credentials and research
Dr. Michael Hsu combines academic preparation in biological science, clinical investigation, organizational leadership and educational administration with tutoring experience beginning in 2008. He holds a B.S. in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology from UCLA, earned summa cum laude with Departmental Honors and a top 5% graduating distinction; an M.S. in Medical Science and Clinical Investigation from Boston University; an Ed.D. in Leadership and Learning in Organizations from Vanderbilt University Peabody College; and an M.A. in Educational Administration from Concordia University Irvine. He maintained strong academic standing across these programs. His additional credentials include a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Biological Sciences with English Learner Authorization, obtained through Cal Poly Pomona and held in permanent status; a California Administrative Services Credential with permanent eligibility; and a California Realtor License, with the examination passed on his first attempt. His background also includes research collaboration with Harvard Medical School, an international academic award, and multiple peer-reviewed academic publications.
Teaching experience and bilingual communication
With more than 10 years of overlapping K–12 and higher education teaching experience, and tutoring beginning with nonprofit work in 2008, Dr. Hsu has served more than 3,000 students across elementary, secondary, college and professional levels. His experience includes in-person and online teaching, primarily in 1:1 settings, and domestic and international learners, including native Chinese-speaking learners from the United States, Taiwan and Mainland China. He is a native speaker of English and Mandarin Chinese, is comfortable with Traditional and Simplified written Chinese, and can teach academic content, communicate with learners and parents or guardians, and provide written feedback in both languages.
Subjects and examination preparation
Available subjects include elementary mathematics for K–6; middle school mathematics for Grades 6–8, including pre-algebra and algebra; high school and college algebra, pre-calculus, introductory statistics and linear algebra; integrated science at middle and high school levels, including biology, chemistry, physics and earth or geoscience; and middle school, high school and college biology. AP Biology and IB Biology are particular areas of strength. Upper-division and graduate biological or biomedical coursework may be considered following an exploratory session. Dr. Hsu’s MCAT science section scores were at or above the 95th percentile, including the 98th percentile in Biological Sciences. He supports preparation in Biology/Biochemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physics/Math. California Realtor License Examination preparation focuses on study skills and techniques. He is familiar with California’s Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics across K–12.

Learning approach and fit
Dr. Hsu uses early diagnostic assignments and discussion to identify skill gaps, then develops customized learning plans, materials and assignments. Prospective clients are encouraged to begin with a discovery session to assess fit and receive useful guidance, with recurring engagements considered afterwards. He works with learners from elementary school through working professionals and career changers. Particular matches include pre-med and MCAT candidates; AP, IB and honors learners; adults returning to education; international learners in Taiwan or China seeking US curriculum enrichment or admissions guidance; and Chinese-speaking families navigating the US education system. Learners requiring intensive, highly specialized in-person special education support are generally outside his scope. Other assignments are considered individually following the initial discovery session.

Dr. Hsu’s approach centers on transparent communication, mutual adjustment and understanding the learner’s priorities. The goal is to build the skills and independence that make learning meaningful.
Find the Root Cause
Use questions and quick assessment to identify where learning breaks down.
Support Independence
Give enough guidance to help the learner reason, practise and grow.
Communicate Clearly
Keep learners, tutors, families and the institution working toward shared goals.
Read Dr. Hsu’s full philosophy statement
In my view, a good student to tutor is one who comes ready to learn, is open to communication, and has a clear goal in mind. Equally important is transparency — a good student speaks up when they’ve missed something or don’t understand, and is willing to go through a quick verbal assessment so the tutor can identify where to focus their support. A good tutor, in turn, brings genuine expertise and uses multiple strategies to meet the learner where they are. Rather than simply providing answers, a good tutor knows how to give just enough support to encourage growth and independence.
When learning becomes difficult, both the tutor and student should work together to identify the root cause of the challenge and be willing to make adjustments as needed. A good tutoring institution supports this relationship by handling the administrative work — gathering context from learners and matching them with an appropriate tutor — so that both parties can focus on learning.
When a match isn’t working, the institution should honor the existing agreement, manage the rematch process gracefully, and communicate clearly with both parties about the reasons without creating conflict or assigning blame. Clear and effective communication with all parties is central to helping everyone succeed.
Parents also play an important role by staying engaged with their child’s progress, encouraging punctuality and completion of work, and remaining responsive to messages from the tutor. The institution serves as the primary communication hub between parents and tutors, though natural, in-the-moment communication during a session is perfectly acceptable when the situation calls for it. Together, these elements — an engaged learner, a skilled and adaptive tutor, a well-organized institution, and a supportive parent — create the conditions for meaningful and lasting growth.
