A great tutor is adaptable across different students and settings, able to anticipate common mistakes before a student even attempts a question, and committed to maintaining clear boundaries that keep both tutor and student safe and respected throughout each session. Both the tutor and student benefit from approaching the relationship with a positive mindset.
When learning becomes difficult, a good tutor pauses, motivates the learner, and resets clear expectations before continuing. If a student arrives disengaged or reluctant to participate, the tutor stays calm and focused on the lesson goals, and parent intervention may also be needed to get the student back on track.
A good tutoring institution ensures that students are clear on their learning goals and thought process before sessions begin, and offers the flexibility to rematch tutors and students when they don’t connect well. Clear expectations should be established upfront to prevent any disconnect. Feedback from parents and students — collected through tutor-managed forms such as Google Forms and recorded by the institution — helps tutors track progress and continuously improve their practice.
A supportive parent is one who is actively involved in post-session feedback, staying informed about how productive each session was and what the student needs to focus on in the week ahead. Small, consistent daily habits — such as 20 minutes of revision — go a long way in reinforcing learning between sessions.
Students are expected to take ownership by bringing their struggles back to the next session, so the tutor can bridge any concept gaps from the previous week. When disagreements arise between parents and tutors, they should be resolved through open, structured discussion via Zoom or email, keeping the focus firmly on the learner’s growth and wellbeing.
